What is the personality and beliefs of the narrator based on his style of speaking and descriptions?

  1. In the text I think that Dickins shows approval towards imagination and creative thinking and his distaste toward hard fact based thinking. You can find evidence of this all over the book but one of the easily noticeable parts are on pg 11 or 13 when Bitzer describes a horse. He gives a hard fact based answer and following this Dickins gives a colorful description of Sissy but then casts a pale colorless shade on Bitzer. Another thing that shows this is through out the story the people who think unimaginatively have troubles dealing with situations. On pg 212 Louisa is completely lost and unable to do anything about her problem with Harthouse because she tried to follow the fact based life. Later in book 3 though Sissy was able to get Harthouse to leave. Sissy is the symbol of imaginative thinking and so the narrator shows favor on imaginative thinking because she is able to deal with situations that fact based learning couldn't.

  2. I completely agree with James, Dickens as the narrator, uses his descriptions of the character to further emphasize his opinion of a fact-based education. This can be seen on p.276 where Dickens describes Bitzer as "colorless" thus suggesting his complete lack of creativity and imagination. This along James' evidence clearly show Dickens hatred toward the Grandgrindian form of education and the effect on its participants.
