King Lear - "Beautiful Quote"

Act 5 Scene 3 (9 - 20)

Lear: No, no, no, no. Come, let's away to prison.
We two alone will sing like birds i' th' cage.
When thou dost ask me blessing, I'll kneel down
And ask of thee forgiveness. So we'll live,
And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh
At gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues
Talk of court news, and we'll talk with them too--
Who loses and who wins; who's in, who's out--
And take upon 's the mystery of things,
As if we were God's spies. And we'll wear out,
In a walled prison, packs and sects of great ones
That ebb and flow by th' moon.

I felt like that quote from King Lear after he is reunited with Cordelia and they are sent to jail is really interesting. He seems so happy and free by what he says which is ironic because he is going to jail. I also think that this quote brings in a lot of nature which is an important aspect to Shakespeare's style. I think that there is a ton to discuss about this quote in terms of how Lear has changed and whether or not he is still mad.

  1. I really like this quote too. we touched on it in our class discussion and I think that it shows that Lear isn't necessarily mad but he's not sane either. I think he is finally happy because he is with the one that loves him most and it doesn't seem to matter that he is in jail. If you think about it, he was more miserable when he was with his other two daughters, which is probably because their greed caused him to lose control. It was almost like he was already in a jail. But now that he is with Cordeila, he feels free.

  2. I agree with Desi, I don't think it matters to him where he is, as long as he has love. From the very beginning the story has been about his quest for finding people who love and appreciate him like when the original discussion took place on how the land would be divided. I think this scene suggests that he will be truly happy when he finds another human to love him as he mentions in a excited and glad tone the words "sing", "pray", and "laugh" (13).
